Philippine and Japan have come up to a strengthened bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges based on Strategic Partnership in the recently concluded Japan-Philippines Defense Ministerial meeting held last January 29, 2015 in Tokyo, Japan.
Defense chiefs of two countries Gen Nakatani and Voltaire T. Gazmin signed “Memorandum on Defense Cooperation and Exchanges between the Ministry of Defense of Japan and the Department of National Defense of the Republic of the Philippines” that will facilitate closer relationship between Japan Self-Defense Forces and Armed Forces of the Philippines in security and defense field.
Among the activities Philippines and Japan will undertake are regular high level defense and military officials meetings. Philippine Navy and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force will conduct naval training this year based on Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea.
Japanese Ministry of Defense-JSDF will also conduct capacity building assistance for members of Philippine Air Force. Both countries also agreed to explore possibility of cooperation in the area of defense equipment and technology.
