“His (Khair Mundo) arrest will greatly affect the operation of the Abu Sayyaf in terms of financial sourcing, as well as in their linkages with foreign extremist groups that help in the training of Abu Sayyaf members in Mindanao,” Armed Forces of the Philippines public affairs chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala told reporters.
Mundo was arrested at Paranaque city Wednesday with the operations of PNP-CIDG and Philippine Army.
Khair Mundo is a top commander, planner, trainor, and financier of Philippine based Abu Sayyaf. The terrorist leader was said to be trained by Jemaah Islamiyah. The US Department of Justice is offering $500,000 for information leading to his arrest. He was captured in 2004, however, he escaped from a provincial jail in 2007 with the help of Abu Sayyaf. While in custody, he confessed to be arranging funds for terrorist activities and bombings in the country.
”We will coordinate with the proper government agencies who are handling Khair Mundos and will provide the necessary security and support to prevent any untoward incident,” Lt. Col. Zagala confirmed.
“We are anticipating a possible sympathy attack and we are always on alert,” Brig. Gen. Carlito Galvez of 104th Army Brigade said. “There is a continuous pursuit operation against the group to keep them on the run and prevent them from staging any of their terror plot.”
