Japan parades modern naval power

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) conducted a Fleet Review that was observed by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Sunday, October 18 at the waters south of Japan. The JMSDF Fleet Review, conducted every three years, was seen by some a show of Japan’s modern naval power.

During the event, the US Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) steamed with the JMSDF Izumo-class helicopter destroyer JS Izumo (DDH 183) and other Japanese warships. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89) also participated in the pass and review.

According Ronald Reagan’s commanding officer Captain Christopher Bolt approximately 50 JMSDF ships participated in the event.

“We are very honored to be in formation with the [JMSDF] as they do their pass and review for Prime Minister Abe,” said Bolt. “The ship looks fantastic and all hands aboard Ronald Reagan are now a part of history.”
