Australia Prime Minister withdraws ambassador to Indonesia: ‘This cannot be simply business as usual’

Amid international pressure to cancel executions, the Indonesian government pushed through with the executions of convicted drug traffickers except Mary Jane Veloso.

“We ask Indonesia to reflect upon the impact on Indonesia’s position in the world and its international reputation. We support Indonesia’s efforts in obtaining clemency for its citizens abroad. Stopping this execution will help those efforts,” Australia, the European Union and France said in a joint statement prior to executions.

Two Australians were executed making Indonesia-Australia relationship suffer. Australia recalled its ambassador to Indonesia. “I want to stress that this is a very important relationship between Australia and Indonesia but it has suffered of what’s been done over the last few hours,” Australia Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.

“We respect Indonesia’s sovereignty but we do deplore what’s been done and this cannot be simply business as usual,” Australia Prime Minister said.
