“We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by [Islamic State],” US National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said.
“The intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity. If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We will provide more information when it is available,” Hayden added.
A four-minute video posted on Youtube, James Foley, an American journalist, was beheaded by an English speaking man with British accent wearing black clothing. In the video, it added that US leaders are Foley’s real killers.
The four-minute video started with a clip of US President Barack Obama authorizing airstrikes in Iraq.
James Foley’s final words were, “I wish I had more time. I wish I could have the hope for freedom to see my family once again.”
Foley was abducted in Syria last 2012.
James Foley’s mother said on a social networking site, “We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person. Please respect our privacy in the days ahead as we mourn and cherish Jim.”
US President Barrack Obama was briefed regarding the video and is expected to release a statement within the day.
