Israel’s Iron Dome intercepted rockets aimed at populated areas

Hamas and its allies like Islamic Jihad have been firing homegrown rockets to Israeli territories like Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Ashdod, Ashkelon, and Kiryat Gat.

The Israel Defense Forces said, Wednesday, that more than 200 rockets launched from Gaza had hit Israel, and nearly 60 were intercepted by the Iron Dome system.

The Iron Dome system was designed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and was later supported by United States. The system was design to detect and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired 4 to 70 kilometers from the Iron Dome.

It targets rockets aimed to populated areas and launches an interceptor missile to destroy them while in the air.

Not all rockets fired will be intercepted by the said air defense system. It will only intercept rockets aimed toward populated areas. If a rocket was calculated by the Iron Dome to hit an empty field, the system will not activate.

Experts say that Israel’s Iron Dome is the most tested and precise missile shield in the world as evidenced by number of casualties.
