Philippines wins silver in FIBA Asia: Rio 2016 Olympics still alive

Philippines men’s national basketball team Gilas Pilipinas won silver in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship after losing from host China in the final match. Final score is 78-67. Aside from winning the gold, China also automatically qualifies for the basketball tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Among the already qualified in the basketball tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics are Brazil, United States, Australia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain, Lithuania and the newly qualified China.

Meanwhile, Philippines winning silver, Iran winning bronze and Japan as fourth placer in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship will all compete in the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament getting another chance of having a spot in the 2016 Olympics.

The 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament is a men’s basketball tournament that will consist of 18 national teams divided into three tournaments of six teams each. The champions in each tournaments qualifies for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Among the 18 teams already qualified in the qualifying tournament are France, Serbia, Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Angola, Tunisia, Senegal, New Zealand – plus Japan, Iran and Philippines from Asia. Three soon to be announced host teams will also be included.
