Philippines national basketball team Gilas Pilipinas finished the second round in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in top spot after winning against Japan, Iran and India. As the leader in Group E, Gilas Pilipinas will be facing Lebanon, the fourth placer in Group F, on October 1, Thursday for the knock-out quarterfinals.
If the Gilas squad wins in the quarterfinals, it will face either Japan or Qatar on October 2 for the semifinals. If Gilas wins in the semifinals, it will face either India, Iran, South Korea or China for the finals and gets a chance for a spot in the basketball tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
FIBA ranked Philippines third in its final edition Power Ranking, a day before the tournament started. “After a week of relative seclusion in Cebu, Gilas Pilipinas looks ripe and ready to be a prime challenger in Changsha,” FIBA said in its Power Ranking
“Andray Blatche has reportedly slimmed down a little bit and looks pretty lithe. Whether that’s true or not is still up in the air, but what’s certain is he’ll be one of the toughest match-ups in the tournament,” it added.
