The Filipino Flash bagged the World Boxing Council North American Boxing Federation super bantamweight title. While, Donnie Nietes retained his World Boxing Organization light flyweight title in his bout against Gilberto Parra of Mexico. Nietes knocked-out his opponent on the tenth round.

Since 2009, Donaire fought for the first time in front of the Filipino crowd. It is also his first bout at 122 pounds since 2013 and first fight since he was knocked out by Nicholas Walters in six rounds last October. Whereas, Nietes is still longest reigning boxing champion in boxing history of the Philippines.
