Cmdr. Gregory Fabic, Navy public affairs office chief said two Mark 38 Model 2 “Bushmaster” 25mm automatic cannons are already in hand stored to secured location. These weapons will be fitted in right (starboard) and left (port) side of the BRP Ramon Alcaraz, becoming the secondary armament to compliment its main weapon 76mm Oto Melara.
According to Fabic, the Navy is waiting for US Coast Guard personnel who will install the weapons. Choosing the USCG to do the work will be more cost effective.
Bushmaster is a remotely powered, chain driven, single-barrel weapon which may be fired in semi-automatic, burst, or automatic modes. The gun can destroy lightly armored vehicles and aerial targets (such as helicopters and slow-flying aircraft). It can also suppress enemy positions such as exposed troops, dug-in positions, and occupied built-up areas. It can fire at 200 rounds per minute. The weapon has an effective range of 3,000 metres, depending on the type of ammunition used.
BRP Alcaraz is currently the base ship of one AW109, and is now deployed in West Philippines Sea.
