The Philippine Army’s 23rd Infantry Battalion (23IB) has found the dead bodies of abducted Loreto Town Mayor Dario Otaza and his son Daryl at Purok 2, Barangay Bitan-agan, Butuan City early morning today, Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) intelligence office said from the report of 23IB.
Army report said the bodies of Mayor Otaza and Daryl were found hogtied and bore multiple gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies. The Mayor and his son was found during an operation following their abduction Monday afternoon.
“Mayor Otaza is himself a former [communist] rebel and a member of the Manobo indigenous people’s group. Since his surrender, he has been a partner of government in ensuring that the gains of inclusive growth reach the broadest spectrum of his constituents,” Cabinet Cluster on Security, Justice, and Peace Undersecretary Manny Bautista said.
Ortaza’s efforts resulted to the surrender of 154 NPA rebels. He also put up programs that were instrumental in ensuring that rebel returnees like himself get the necessary support as they transition back into the mainstream.
“NPA rebels who enjoy kinship with Mayor Otaza through the IP network have indicated a desire to reenter formal society because of the Mayor’s integrity, credibility, and the success of his programs,” Bautista added.
