Japan’s Emperor, Empress to visit Philippines first time in history

The Emperor and Empress of Japan will be visiting the Philippines for the first time in history early 2016. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will be visiting the country accepting the invitation of President Benigno Aquino III. This was confirmed by Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. today, October 13. Preparations in light of the said visit already started.

“We are pleased to announce that the Philippines has started necessary coordination with Japan for a visit of Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress of Japan, to the Philippines, possibly in early 2016. This visit responds to President Aquino’s invitation,” Coloma said.

“It will be the first time a reigning Emperor of Japan will be visiting the Philippines, and returns the warm welcome Their Majesties extended to the president when he visited Tokyo earlier this year,” Coloma added.

President Aquino made a state visit to Japan from June 2 to June 5, 2015. During this visit, the President paid a call on the Emperor and Empress of Japan who hosted a state banquet for the Aquino.
