A total of 41 aspirants looking to participate in the May 9, 2016 national polls filed their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) at the start of the five-day filing period on Monday at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) main office in Intramuros, Manila. Aside from well-known politicians, several unknown personalities have filed their COCs, seeking to be elected in national positions — presidential, vice presidential and senatorial.
As of 5 p.m. Monday, 22 individuals have manifested their determination to run for president, three for vice president and 16 for senator.
Among the early filers of COCs for the highest post in the land are: Vice President Jejomar Binay of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA); former Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) chief and lawmaker Augusto Syjuco Jr.; and Rizalito David of the Kapatiran Party.
Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan III of UNA, Independent candidate Myrna Mamon and Albert Alba of Kapatiran Party are aspiring to participate in the vice presidential race. Former Senator Panfilo Lacson is among those seeking a senatorial seat. He was recorded as the first to file his COC.
On the other hand, Bayan Muna Party-list Rep. Nery Colmenares filed his COC together with his cousin actress Angel Locsin (Angelica Colmenares in real life) and Satur Ocampo. He is running for a senatorial seat. He said that he is seeking a higher office, as he is convinced that a fighter is needed in the Senate.
