P160-M worth equipment acquired for better MRT3 track upkeep

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has chosen the joint venture of Kempal Construction & Supply Corp. and TPE Share Sales Inc. to supply a brand-new rail grinding machine for Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) system. This improvement project for the MRT-3 system seeks to minimize operational disruptions by ensuring better track upkeep, DOTC said in a statement October 7.

A railgrinder is a maintenance train used to restore the profile and remove irregularities from worn rail track to extend its life and to improve the ride of trains using the track.

The contract, worth P160-Million, includes a brand-new machine, along with operations and maintenance manuals, repair tools, and a five (5)-year supply of spares. Delivery will be within 360 calendar days from issuance of the Notice to Proceed.

“With its own rail grinding machine, the MRT-3 management can minimize costs, as similar equipment will no longer be leased from other firms,” DOTC said. “This will put an end to the classification of systematic rail grinding as special repair works – which entails additional costs – and instead characterize it as an ordinary preventive maintenance undertaking.”
