AFP chief wants Southern Luzon ‘inhospitable’ for communist rebels

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief-of-Staff General Hernando DCA Iriberri challenged the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) to make its area of responsibility ‘inhospitable’ for communist rebel group New People’s Army (NPA). The AFP chief visited SOLCOM’s headquarters at at Camp Guillermo Nakar, Lucena City morning of August 11 to check on the peace and security efforts of the military in the region.

A command conference was conducted attended by SOLCOM chief Lieutenant General Ricardo Visaya and his staffs, Army Infantry Division & Brigade Commanders, Deputy Commander of the Naval Forces Southern Luzon, and the Commanders of Tactical Operation Groups 4 and 5 of the Philippine Air Force.

“Win the peace, secure the peace in Southern Luzon and make it inhospitable for the NPAs,” said Gen Iriberri as his guidance.

He told SOLCOM to make it to the point that the people will not welcome the NPAs in their communities anymore. “Everything should be unfavorable for them,” the top military official said.

SOLCOM said “by this, the AFP Chief believes that more NPA rebels will lay down their arms and return to the mainstream society.”
