Filipino, Indonesian government officials to meet in Jakarta for Mary Jane’s case

Filipino officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and Department of Justice (DOJ) are scheduled to meet Indonesian officials tomorrow, July 29 in Jakarta to discuss the case of Mary Jane Veloso. “This is part of the DFA’s continuous commitment to provide assistance to Mary Jane Veloso,” DFA said in a statement.

“Officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and Department of Justice (DOJ) will be meeting with Indonesian officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and the Attorney General’s Office on July 29 to discuss developments in the cases filed in the Philippines against the recruiters of Mary Jane Veloso,” DFA added.

“They will also discuss the assistance available under the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Among Like-Minded ASEAN Member Countries (ASEAN MLAT),” the DFA said.

It can be remembered that Veloso was spared from death at the last minute when the Indonesian government unexpectedly ordered a stay in her execution.

President Benigno S. Aquino III made a last minute appeal to his Indonesian counterpart Jokowi Widodo to make Veloso a witness against her illegal recruiter Kristina Sergio.
