Andal Ampatuan Sr. remains in critical condition

Ampatuan patriarch, Andal Ampatuan, Sr., the alleged mastermind and one of the many suspects in the Maguindanao Massacre, remained in critical condition at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Quezon City. Andal Sr., 74, remained at NKTI intensive care unit (ICU) since Friday evening after showing shortness of breath.

Insp. Aries Villaester, spokesman for the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-National Capital Region on Tuesday confirmed that Andal Ampatuan Sr., is still alive and closely monitored at NKTI, contrary to some reports.

“Buhay pa si Andal Sr., nasa ICU (Intensive Care Unit) siya ng NKTI since last Friday evening,” Villaester told the Philippines News Agency .

A team of BJMP personnel has been providing security for Ampatuan since the latter was transferred from his detention cell at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City to the NKTI last June 5.

The Ampatuan patriarch has been diagnosed to have stage four liver cancer.

Last month, the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) diagnosed Ampatuan Sr., with liver cirrhosis after undergoing abdominal ultrasound and CT scan.

Ampatuan patriarch, his sons former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao governor Zaldy Ampatuan and former Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. and 75 others were suspected to be involved in the mass killing of 58 people, including 37 media practitioners on Nov. 23, 2009 in Maguindanao.
