Filipino netizens call on Google to stop giving credence to China’s territory grab

UPDATED: A petition at Change.Org is urging Google Inc. to stop calling Scarborough Shoal part of Zhongsha Island chain in Google Maps. China claims to administer Zhongsha Island chain under Sansha prefecture-level city in Hainan province.

Scarborough Shoal, also known as Bajo de Masinloc and Panatag Shoal, is located 124 nautical miles west of Zambales and is within the 200 nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Philippine Continental Shelf. It is part of the Municipality of Masinloc, Province of Zambales.

“China’s sweeping claim of South China Sea under their 9-dash line purportedly historical boundary is illegal and is creating tension among nations,” says in the petition at Change. Org.

“Google maps showing this is part of Zhongsha island chain gives credence to what is plainly a territory grab that peace loving nations should stand against,” the petition further says.

“I’m signing this petition because Panatag Shoal is within the Philippines 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EZZ); Claimed by China illegally & creating tension among peace loving Nations,” Alfredo Bajao said.

According to Google Maps online software, the provider of the information, saying Scarborough Shoal is part of Zhongsha Islands of Sansha, is AutoNavi. AutoNavi is a China-based web mapping content and navigation, and location-based solutions corporation.
