After the Artbitral Tribunal convened to deliberate on the arguments presented by Philippines, the five-member tribunal informed the Philippine representatives that a second round of oral arguments on the issue of jurisdiction will be conducted. The second round is scheduled next week, July 13.
“The Philippines received word that the Arbitral Tribunal will conduct a second round of arguments on the issue of jurisdiction. The Philippine side has undertaken sufficient preparation to ensure that the best answers will be provided to the questions expected to be propounded by the Tribunal during the second round,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a released statement.
During the two-day first round, Philippines presented its arguments to prove that the Arbitral Tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration has jurisdiction over the case it filed against China’s ambitious West Philippine Sea claim and that there is no bar to the exercise of its jurisdiction.
Philippine legal team also presented to the tribunal arguments regarding the strength of the Philippines’ environmental and fishing claims against China.
