Philippine Army commander is the new AFP chief

Today, Lt Gen Hernando Delfin Carmelo A. Iriberri was named Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during the Change of Command ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. Lt Gen Iriberri replaces retiring General Gregorio Pio Catapang.

Iriberri served as the 56th Commanding General of the Philippine Army since February 7, 2014. He is a member of Philippine Military Academy class 1983 and served as infantry man. He also served in other fields of the Army such as intelligence, public relations and staff functions and international peace support operations.

In intelligence wherein he served mostly in the field of counterintelligence, he was instrumental in hastening the healing process between the AFP and the members of the Young Officers Union (YOU), the group of junior officers who prominently figured in the 1989 coup, the bloodiest launched by the RAM-SFP-YOU against the Cory Aquino government.

In the field of International Peace Support operations, Iriberri showed to the other members of the coalition in the United Nations Guards Contingent in Iraq (UNGCI) his qualities as a valuable representative and ambassador of goodwill of the AFP.
