Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food will be conducting a probe on the reported smuggled fake rice from China. Senator Cynthia Villar, chair of the said panel said the Senate hearing will be held on July 13.
The lady Senator said the National Food Authority and Customs are not issuing rice import permits to private firms.
“If ever we are going to import rice, it should be government to government through NFA, so kung nasunod ‘yun, dapat walang importation of rice na katulad nito, fake rice,” Villar said during the weekly press conference at Senate. “Of course, baka naman inismuggle na nila, hindi na sila kumuha ng import permit sa NFA.”
She added that NFA, Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Customs, Department of Justice and Food and Drug Administration will be invited for the said hearing.
“We have to understand what is the implication of fake rice in the Philippines. We have always emphasized that food safety is always important,” Senator Villar said.
