Cebu breaks ground for world’s first resort airport

The world’s first resort airport undergoes groundbreaking ceremony today, June 29 in Cebu. “It will not only cement our place on the global map as a major tourist and business destination, it will boost the local economy and is projected to generate jobs especially in Cebu,” DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya said.

Concessionaire GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) will be building a new passenger terminal building (PTB), touted as world-class, in Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

GMCAC will also renovate existing terminal at MCIA and will convert it into exclusively-domestic facility.

Construction of the new terminal will be completed in three (3) years, or by 2018, while the renovation of the existing terminal is slated to be completed in 2019.

The airport’s passenger capacity will surge from 4.5 million to 12.5 million per year.

As per the concession agreement signed between GMR Megawide Consortium (GMCAC) and Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), GMCAC has taken full operational control from 1 November 2014 for renovation & modernization of MCIA. According to the agreement, GMR Megawide Consortium will operate the airport for a period of 25 years (commencing 1 November 2014), GMCAC said.
