Malacañang to China: Philippines not at fault if it gains support

Malacañang Palace on Friday, June 26 said Philippines cannot be at fault if other countries like Unites States and Japan agree with its approach in resolving the West Philippine Sea issue. This is after Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Senior Colonel Yang Yujun said Philippines is dragging countries outside the region into sea dispute.

“We cannot be faulted if other countries have lauded the approach that we have decided to take in resolving this dispute that we have with our neighbor,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte told reporters during the daily press briefing at Malacañang.

Valte added that the issue concerns countries outside the region because 60 percent to 80 percent of global trade passes through West Philippine Sea.

The Chinese spokesman said during a press conference on Thursday that “some regional nations drag countries outside the region to interfere in the South China Sea issue, demonstrate muscles, and intentionally play up regional tensions.”

The statement from the Chinese defense spokesman was made in light of simultaneous joint military exercises of Philippines with Japan and US.
