The Philippine Men’s National Football Team, popularly known as the Azkals, wins against its second opponent in the Group H of 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia – Asian Qualifiers Round 2. Azkals upset Yemen (0-2) in the match held at Qatar Sports Club Stadium in Doha last night, June 16. Azkals came from a 2-1 win against Bahrain.
Misagh Bahadoran and Iain Ramsay scored at 53rd and 74th minute, respectively. “The persistent attacks from both the left and right flanks paved way for a goal by Misagh Bahadoran on the 53rd minute as he grabbed the ball from the defense line with a fancy turn followed by a left foot shot from inside the penalty box,” the Philippine Football Federation said.
“On the 74th minute, the Ramsay-Patino wing tandem produced the 2nd goal with Patino successfully bringing the ball close to the end line to send a sharp ground cross for a one-touch shot by Ramsay,” PFF added.
2018 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers Round 2 follows a home-and-away round-robin format.
Philippines’ next assignments are Uzbekistan on September 8 (Home) and North Korea on October 8 (Away). Philippines and Bahrain will gain face on October 13 (Away), Yemen on November 15 (Home), Uzbekistan on March 24, 2016 (Away) and North Korea on March 29 (Home).
The eight group (A to H) winners and the four best group runners-up will advance to the third round of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification as well as qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup finals.
For the third round of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification, 12 teams from second round will be divided into two groups of six teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches. The top two teams of each group will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The two third-placed teams of each group from the third round will play home-and-away over two legs. The winner will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.
