Moro Islamic Liberation Front to decommission 75 war weapons, 145 fighters

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front is set to decommission some of its war weapons and commissioned fighters tomorrow, June 16. The event, dubbed as Ceremonial Turnover of Weapons and Decommissioning of the MILF Combatants, will be held at the old provincial capitol in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.

Fifty-five high-powered and twenty crew-served weapons will be decommissioned along with 145 MILF combatants.

Decommissioned MILF fighters will receive cash assistance, college scholarships for those who want to continue their tertiary education or opportunity to avail technical and vocational training from the Technical Skills and Development Training Authority (TESDA).

“We laud the MILF’s commitment and sincerity to peace. This is a historic event,” Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief-of-Staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang said. “What is more laudable here is that the MILF is voluntarily turning-in their firearms in an environment that continues to have other armed groups.”

“The AFP acknowledges that the decommissioning program will be gradual and in a phased manner as indicated in the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) which the GPH and MILF negotiating panels both signed,” Catapang noted.

President Benigno Aquino III, legislators from the Lower and Upper House of Congress, MILF Chair Murad Ebrahim and OPAPP Teresita Quintos Deles will be present at the said event.
