US pledge to defend PHL against external armed attack stands strong

United States and Philippines reaffirmed strong and enduring ties during the meeting of Secretary of National Defense Voltaire Gazmin and US Defense Secretary Ash Carter in Hawaii, May 27.

“Secretary Carter welcomed the opportunity to discuss regional security issues with one of our closest allies in the Asia-Pacific, and stressed that the U.S. commitment to defend the Philippines is ironclad,” Pentagon said in a news release.

U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty has bound two nations for more than 60 years with “common determination to defend themselves against external armed attack, so that no potential aggressor could be under the illusion that either of them stands alone in the Pacific Area.”

“Nagbago na ang equation ngayon. Tinutumbok na niya ang China. Dati hindi niya sinasabi. Ang sinasabi niya we are not party to the claims so we do not want to get involved. Ito ngayon, direct na sinabi tutulong dahil nga pareho na tayo ng posisyon ngayon,” Secretary Gazmin said as quoted by GMA News Online.
