Indonesia sinks 41 illegal fishing boats from PHL, Vietnam, Thailand, China

The Indonesian government destroyed a steel-made 300-gross-ton Chinese fishing vessel together with other vessels caught illegally operating in Indonesian waters. Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries destroyed the Chinese Gui Xei Yu 12661 by detonating low-explosive devise planted on its hull.

“This is not a show of force. This is just merely enforcing our laws,” Indonesian Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said as quoted by Jakarta Post.

Among the 41 vessels simultaneously destroyed were eleven boats from Philippines, five from Vietnam and two from Thailand. The event was held in time for Indonesia’s National Awakening Day.

A day before Indonesia destroyed the vessels, the Department of Foreign Affairs repatriated 17 Filipino fishermen of fishing vessels KM Garuda 05, KM Garuda 06, KM Inday Hubag, KM JVY and KM JV from Jakarta, Indonesia caught illegally fishing in Indonesian waters.

“Since January 2015, the DFA has repatriated 139 Filipino fishermen from Indonesia after entering Indonesian waters without proper documentation and permission.” DFA said.
