The family of convicted drug trafficker Mary Jane Veloso is asking for understanding after many Filipinos online called MJ’s mother Celia Veloso ungrateful to the government. It can be remembered that instead of thanking the government for MJ’s stay, Mrs. Veloso said she will make the government pay for its alleged shortcomings in dealing with the case of Mary Jane.
Mrs. Veloso said she hopes that people will know their story. “To all who prayed, lighted a candle and supported, thank you. To those who are making negative statements, thank you but you do not know our ordeal in the past five years,” Mrs. Veloso told ABS-CBN News North Central Luzon.
She added that the Department of Foreign Affairs told them that Mary Jane’s case was hopeless with the amount of drugs found from her baggage in Indonesia. (“Ngayon na lang sila tumutulong pero yung sulat na binigay ng anak ko ang talagang nakapagpalubag sa loob ni Widodo.)
President Aquino said “we did what we could. We were not involved in the creation of the problem. You must remember she was arrested, if I am not mistaken, April of 2010.” She was arrested in Indonesia with 2.6 kilograms of heroin at Yogyakarta airport.
President Widodo of Indonesia temporarily cancelled MJ’s execution after knowing that her illegal recruiter was arrested in Philippines but “if Mary Jane becomes very very helpful in the process, well that might be a basis for extending some clemency,” Aquino said.
