Common time zone proposed for ASEAN members as sign of unity

A common time zone was proposed during the opening ceremony of 26th ASEAN Summit at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak proposed the common time zone for 10 members of ASEAN as a symbol of unity. According to him, visible unity will help ASEAN to become the third force in Asia next to China and India.

“Global investors have long been drawn to India and China. But ASEAN can and should position itself as the “third force” in the region, and more visible unity will help us to do so,” the Malaysian state head said.

“One proposal would be if we adopted a common time zone throughout ASEAN. This would be a good symbol of ASEAN unity, and good for business,” he added.

Philippines is in the same time zone with Brunei and Malaysia; one hour ahead of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam; one and half hour ahead of Myanmar.
