Chinese Coast Guard fired water cannon to Filipino fishermen

Fishermen from provinces of Bataan, Zambales and Pangasinan who were operating near Panatag Shoal (Scarborough Shoal) were driven away by Chinese coast guard personnel using their water cannon. The said territory was a traditional fishing area for Filipino fishermen until China claimed it in 2012.

“The Chinese vessel was about 150 meters from our boats when its personnel fired a water cannon. One of us fell off the boat and sustained injuries,” Deogenes Corseles told Inquirer.net.

General Gregorio Pio Catapang today said Philippine Coast Guard vessels will be used to escort Filipino fishermen who were affected by China’s aggressiveness.

He said the military will “continue with our modernization program to put up a credible defense force for our territorial defense.”
