The Philippine government will resume the repair of facilities in Pagasa Island including the Rancudo airstrip. Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said, during a special forum on the rule of law in est Philippine Sea, that repair and reconstruction works will not violate the 2002 Declaration of Conduct.
Repair and reconstruction of military facilities in Pagasa Island involves two stages. The first stage will involve dredging activities to enable ships from approaching the island. Second stage is the actual repair of the air strip.
Del Rosario said “even as we face a formidable challenge, we have the law on our side. International law is the great equalizer. We are, moreover, in the right and right is might.”
The said forum was organized by Foreign Correspondents’ Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) and was attended by FOCAP members and representatives from the local media, academe, government sector and business community.
