Philippine electric industry is infected by what Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago termed as ‘national-security virus’. The lady senator said that a firm managed by the Chinese government owns 40 percent of the capital stock in the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.
National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, a private firm distributing electricity to millions of consumers, “is the core or the heart of the electric power industry,” Senator Santiago said in a statement. China is the country’s rival in a bitter territorial dispute over the West Philippine Sea
“The Philippine Constitution is replete with requirements of nationalism but such a vital and strategic industry such as the electric power industry is infected by a national-security virus,” the senator noted.
