US assisting to upgrade Philippine Coast Guard substation in Tubbataha

“It is great news that the US government has finally given full compensation for the damages to the Tubbataha Reef Natural Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” Senator Loren Legarda said February 18. The US government paid PhP87,033,570.71 compensating for the damage made by USS Guardian after grounding at Tubbataha Reef on January 17, 2013.

“I am also happy that they will be providing assistance to the Philippine Coast Guard in upgrading its substation in Tubbataha,” the lady senator added.

The compensation will be utilized for the protection and rehabilitation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Portions of the fund will also be used to further enhance capability to monitor the area and prevent similar incidents in the future, Department of Foreign Affairs said.

“The US government is also providing additional assistance to the Philippine Coast Guard to upgrade the PCG Substation in Tubbataha,” DFA said in a release.
