US pays PHL in full for Tubbataha damage

United States government has fully paid Philippines the amount of Php87 million last January 20 as compensation to the damage at Tubbataha Reefs done by USS Guardian (MCM-5), an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship of US Navy, after grounding at the Natural Park.

“The Philippine government received from the US government the full requested amount of Php 87,033,570.71,” Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Wednesday, February 18.

“In addition to the compensation received, the US government is also providing additional assistance to the Philippine Coast Guard to upgrade the PCG Substation in Tubbataha,” DFA said.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is a protected area and listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around 2,345.67 square meters of reefs were damaged during the January 17, 2013 incident. US Navy decided to cut USS Guardian into three before the removal to avoid further damage.
