Two Abu Sayyaf rebels killed after 7-hour gun battle in Basilan

Armed Forces of the Philippines reports an encounter between Joint Task Group Basilan troopers and Abu Sayyaf bandits in Bgy Kuhon, Al Barka, Basilan. The gun battle started 5:45am today and lasted for 7 hours.

Government troops rescued 5 innocent civilians who were shot by the Abu Sayyaf rebels. Two rebels were killed and two others were wounded. On the side of government, six were wounded but they are now in stable condition after being treated in a local hospital.

“The AFP and PNP are relentlessly pursuing the bandits in Basilan province in collaboration with the local government and in coordination with other stakeholders including the MILF communities,” AFP said in a statement.

AFP commended its soldiers and “the heroic pilots of MG MD520 attack helicopter that was hit by enemy fire while providing close air support to the ground troops which were swarmed by the bandits.”
