PHL: West Philippine Sea issue will be approached based on international rules

“The position of our government will not be changed on the need to implement a rules-based approach in facing this issue in the West Philippine Sea or South China Sea,” Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a press briefing at Malacanang today.

Philippines brought the issue in the West Philippine Sea to the Netherland-based arbitral tribunal to decide on maritime disputes under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

“We also push our position in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and other international forum that it should be resolved based on the principle of Code of Conduct declared over 10 years ago,” Coloma added.

The arbitral tribunal is expected to make a ruling early next year.
