Philippines is among the five shortlisted countries bidding to host the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. “PH shortlisted in bid for 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. With 5 other countries,” business tycoon and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Manny V. Pangilinan posted on his micro-blogging account.
He added that China, Turkey, Qatar and Germany-France will be competing with Philippines. Pangilinan also said that an evaluation team will arrive in the country next week. “FIBA Evaluation Commission – Inspection Team – coming next week to Manila. Good luck to us,” he posted.
Philippine Tourism Undersecretary Domingo Ramon Eneiro, Philippine Basketball Association Chairman Pato Gregorio, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Sonny Barrios, SBP Deputy Executive Director Butch Antonio, Logistics Consultant Andrew Teh and Octagon Asia-Pacific President Sean Nicholls went to Geneva, Switzerland last December 2014 for a workshop in line with the bidding.
Host country automatically gets one berth. Philippines last hosted FIBA World Championship in 1978.
