“Our relations with the United States have never been better,” Philippine Ambassador to United States Cuisia states in an event for Washington-based journalists. The top diplomat mentioned Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement as one of the main highlight of PHL-US relations in 2014. However, EDCA is currently facing scrutiny in Philippine Supreme Court.
Cuisia also noted that after the aviation safety upgrade from US Federal Aviation Administration, “Philippine Airlines will now be flying from Manila to New York starting in March. This positive development benefits both our countries as it creates more opportunities for trade and tourism.”
Also in 2014, Office of the United States Trade Representative removed Philippines from the Special 301 Watch List of countries with intellectual property rights issues. The country has been continuously listed in the watch list since 1994.
“In terms of economic cooperation and development assistance, Ambassador Cuisia mentioned the estimated $139 million that the US committed under the Partnership for Growth program and $434 million under the Philippine Compact with the Millennium Challenge Corporation,” the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. writes.
