Arbitration won’t let big and militarily strong nation dominate the smaller

“We have always been asked why we resorted to arbitration. Our answer is simple. International law is the great equalizer,” Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia told Washington-based journalists in an event he hosted.

“By taking the legal route, we are showing the world that States have other viable options to resolving disputes other than in asymmetrical negotiation where the big and militarily strong nation dominate the smaller in the negotiating table,” Ambassador Cuisia said as quoted by Philippine Embassy in US.

The Ambassador also encouraged smaller nations locked in same situation to peacefully settle disputes through the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) or the United Nations Charter.
