China’s West Philippine Sea reclamation activities 50% done, AFP prepares defense

Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang revealed in an event Wednesday that China is halfway accomplished of its ongoing reclamation activities in the West Philippine Sea.

“If you quantify it, maybe about 50 percent completed,” General Catapang said.

According to Catapang, the current reclamation activities on four disputed reefs in the West Philippine Sea is alarming.

“Alarming in the sense that it could be used for other purposes other than for peaceful use,” he said.

“We know that there is still ongoing reclamation in the area and we are just awaiting decision of the International Tribunal for the law of the Sea, and the government is confident any decision that would be make would be favorable to our country,” Catapang added.

Moreover, the AFP Chief cited the AFP modernization program and the action formed by major services commands to further improve the combined operation capabilities. He also mentioned that Voltaire Gazmin, Secretary of Defense, advised the AFP high-ranking officials to “prepare yourself for territorial defense.”
