Philippine Navy Vic-commander Rear Admiral Caesar Taccad said two Gregorio Del Pilar class frigates – the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar and the BRP Ramon Alcaraz – have greatly helped the country to improve maritime situational awareness capabilities.
Aside from boosting maritime awareness, these frigates helped Filipino naval officers and personnel to gain experience and training in preparation for more modern sea assets.
“With these two vessels, our naval operators will have a new avenue for training and equipment that will prepare them for the procurement of modern equipment. Moreover, the shift in focus from internal security to territorial defense, as one of key drivers in our naval strategy, will now be realized,” Taccad said as quoted by government-run news agency.
Philippine Navy is now waiting for the delivery of two strategic sealift vessels from Indonesia in 2016 and 2017. Additionally, the Department of National Defense preparing to finalize the contract for two missile capable warships early this year, 2015.
