Death penalty for drug lords pushed in Senate

During a Senate public hearing regarding Senate Bill No. 2080 or the Act Imposing Death Penalty in the Philippines, Senator Vicente Sotto III told the committee chaired by Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III that drug lords “cannot do it in China, in Malaysia because they have death penalty. So they manufacture the illegal drugs in the Philippines.”

“This death penalty is for high level drug trafficking. It is not for the poor who are just the victims of illegal drugs,” Sotto said.

December 15, the group of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima uncovered the luxurious lifestyles of high-profile inmates, majority of them drug lords, inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. They discovered shabu, huge amount of cash, mini-theater, Jacuzzi, play station, refrigerator, recording studio and documents of alleged drug trade inside the NBP’s maximum security compound.

“It boils down in my point that reclusion perpetua is pro-rich, especially for high level drug trafficking,” Sotto told reporters in a conference after the hearing.
