EDCA an effective deterrent, China stopped harrassing PHL vessels

“Right now, we use Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement as a deterrent to threats to our security. As we continue using the EDCA, we continue to fill the gap [in our military] through our modernization program,” Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told Senate committee on foreign relations in a public hearing regarding EDCA.

Gazmin also believes that China stopped attacking or harassing Philippine vessels on a resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.

However, Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said “I think that is due to the bravery of our own servicemen. I don’t think the Americans played a part, but never mind, that is your interpretation.”

Marcos added that EDCA does no guarantee United States will come to aide in case Philippines engaged into a “shooting war” with other country within disputed territories.

“Through EDCA that we envision a greater preparation mechanism for the Mutual Defense [treaty] to be implemented effectively in the future,” said Defense Undersecretary Pio Lorenzo Batino.A was signed by United States and the Philippines on April 28, 2014.
