After 80 long years, Philippines finally defeated Indonesia in a football match, a first after 1934.
During a group stage match of the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup in Vietnam, Philippine Azkals overpowered Indonesia’s Merah Putih. The match concluded with 4-0 with Phil Younghusband, Manny Ott, Martin Steuble, and Rob Gier scoring for the Azkals.
In the previous years, Indonesia beaten Philippines nineteen times with two draws.
Philippines now secures a semi-final position in the tournament, a knock-out round. Though the next stage of the tournament is secured, Azkals will still need to face Vietnam on November 28. Only two teams will advance for the next stage, however, Vietnam and Indonesia are tied in the second position. Matches on Friday will determine Vietnam and Indonesia’s fate in the group stage.
Competing on Group B are Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar. Philippines will possibly face the top two finisher in this group. Semi-final matches will start on December 6.
