Senator Nancy Binay criticizes the Iloilo Convention Center construction project. She said the donation of 17,371 square meters land from Megaworld Corporation did not come as free. The female senator added that no proper feasibility study before building the center.
“I believe that the deed of donation for the land the ICC sits on did not come for free. The convention center was built without any event in mind—only an agreement with Megaworld Corporation which donated the land,” Binay said.
“There was no initiative to conduct cost-benefit analysis and feasibility study on the construction of the ICC. How could they deem the ICC as the solution to the Iloilo hotel industry’s woes?
“Did they study whether the government could have saved more if they built it on government-owned land? That way, they might have saved on the price of the land and would not be beholden to Megaworld in terms of the design.
Senator Nancy added that Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting is just an ‘afterthought.’
“During the previous hearing, we found out that Megaworld can even rescind the donation if the government fails to follow the agreed upon design for the ICC,” Nancy Binay noted.
