Cebu City First District Representative Raul V. Del Mar filed a House Bill that will pave way for the construction of a Subway Tunnel Transport Network System in Cebu to serve Central Business Districts. The measure was proposed to solve traffic and flooding problems in the first congressional district of Cebu City.
“While we look to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to alleviate the traffic problem in Cebu City in the not too distant future, additional measures need to be done to solve the problem considering the city’s expected growth,” Del Mar noted.
If passed into law, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be tasked to do the feasibility study. DPWH will also do the detailed engineering, acquisition of sites and eventually the construction of the subway tunnel.
National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will also be mandated to include the subway system in projects through World Bank-assisted Philippine Transport Infrastructure Development Framework Plan and in the 2011-2016 Public Investment Program (PIP).
