Binay spokesman’s claim Senate spends P50 M per hearing not true

Vice Presidential spokesman for political affairs Jonvic Remulla on Thursday said that the Senate is spending PhP50 million on every hearing it is conducting, specifically the body that is investigating the Makati City Parking Building also known as Makati City Hall Building 2 and other corrupt practices in the City of Makati.

Remulla added that if the senate continues to investigate for a hundred more days, the legislative body will have to spend 5 billion pesos for this investigation.

However, Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chair Teofisto Guingona III belies the allegation.

“That’s not true. It has no basis,” Guingona told Senate media through SMS.

Senate hearings are done on regular working days and “no extraordinary funds were spent,” he added. ”We do not spend additional pay for the salaries of staff and employees and no extra payment for the electricity because that is the normal functions of the Senate.”

Senator Guingona also clarified that they are not paying for any airtime. “There is media coverage but that is part of the functions of Senate PRIB (Public Relation and Information Bureau).”

“We always practice prudent spending of public funds,” the Senator noted.

The Senate Blue Ribbon sub-committee has already conducted twelve hearings, while Binay’s camp has been calling to end the body’s probe. On Senator Trillanes’ estimate the investigation may continue through the first quarter of next year.
