Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is visiting South Korea to meet Korean investors for the light rail transit (LRT) system for Davao City. The mayor is spending his own money for his travel in South Korea.
Duterte already tapped a Korean firm Korea Engineering and Construction (KEC) to conduct a feasibility study for the said mass transport system in Davao City. The study that started September this year will run until March 2015.
“Right now, we have narrow roads that we can’t expand because we can’t buy the expensive lands [for road widening]; our only option is to have railways,” Duterte said in previous speech.
“Can you imagine if you have many buses spewing more carbon emission that contributes to pollution,” he added.
The Korean firm has four possible types of railed transit and four routes for Davao City. One is a monorail transit and a 13 kilometer route going through Ateneo de Davao University in Roxas Street, Abreeza Mall in Davao, SM Mall Lanang, DIHO and the Davao International Airport in Buhangin.
