Filipinos in HK join pro-democracy protest

Some Filipinos have already joined in the pro-democracy protest in Hong Kong. According to reports, long time Filipino residents and OFWs are showing support through their presence.

“We are one with the people of Hong Kong in the call to stop the repression against their democratic rights. We call for the immediate release of the arrested protesters. We call for the HK government to respect the people’s rights,” Asian Migrants Coordinating Body said.

This action from Filipinos in Hong Kong is amid Philippine government’s advice not to join the rally.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr. said that instead of participating in the protest Filipinos may just focus on their daily activities.

Philippine Consul General Bernardita Catalla said, “While we believe in democracy, our heroes fought and died for freedom and many of our countrymen were imprisoned or went to the mountains for freedom, I would just like to remind everyone that we are here to work and we know there are limits to what we can do here.”

“Please, stay away from the areas where protests are, we don’t want to be involved. Let’s always remember that Hong Kong is part of China,” Catalla added.
