“It’s just some time ago that there were coup fears because of the movement,” Lieutenant Colonel Noel Detoyato, Philippine Army spokesman. “There was movement because they picked up the rifles and the APC’s were there to escort them.”
Last week a military convoy was spotted plying EDSA, it was associated by some to a destabilization plan against the government, now, it is made clear that the said military convoy ran to secure the delivery of 27,300 units of brand-new M-4 automatic rifles.
“It’s beautiful, it’s very inspiring, it would give you shivers because you know that it is brand new,” the army spokesman said. “You know, our soldiers are not rich, and for them to receive new equipment is a welcome development.”
Each M-4 costs P38,402.10 and the entire order is estimated to be worth P2.4 billion.
The M-4 is a shorter and lighter variant of the M-16A2 assault rifle. It is a gas-operated, magazine-fed, selective fire, shoulder-fired weapon with a telescoping stock and 14.5-inch (370-mm) barrel to ease close quarters combat.
Additional units will be delivered to complete the 63,000 units ordered.
